It is 1607. The Spanish have landed on the shores of the Philippines to pacify the natives, convert them to Christianity, and mine the islands for its gold. Headstrong and loyal, Lakam, a Babaylan, refuses to submit to Spanish imperial authority and convert to Christianity. With her village destroyed and her people killed, she seeks refuge in the Cave of Rituals in the jungle vastness of the sacred mountains, but she is caught, raped and tortured. On the eve of her execution, she regains her freedom with the help of her jailer, Joaquin Santiago, who refuses to see her killed. Now a remontada (outlaw), Lakam realizes the old ways will cease to exist unless she finds a way for it to continue in the ruined ashes of the world she knows.

I actually enjoyed the book in a bittersweet, anguished way. I see a lot of other reviewers found the storyline of the priest over-the-top. I believe it to be accurate as far as a fictional accounting and historical reality, because the truth is that there are people who have lived and still live who are just as twisted and demented as the priest. Unless you have lived under the thumb of someone else's control over your people, as mine and others have, it's hard to imagine such evil directed at another human being. For me, it didn't seem far fetched in the least.Product details

Lakam The Mana Series Volume 1 Isobelle Cate Jennifer Stevens 9781534789708 Books Reviews
This is a story of the Spanish conquest of an island. The horrors perpetrated on the indigenous people and the torture of people by the church friars. Conversion was seldom easy or long lived. It is a short read and it's the first of a series. I didn't enjoy it enough to check out the other books in the series. It was ok, but...
I have always enjoyed books about Native Americans and how they lived. This story lives up to all my expectations and then some. The central character is a strong woman who leads and advises her people with knowledge and sympathy yet she was able at the same time to be a woman capable of love for others. I look forward to reading book number two in this series very soon.
Enjoyed this read. It helps that I'm fluent in Tagalog, Spanish and English, among other languages. But the timely, masterful infusion of drips and drabs of local lingo of the era adds to the flavor. The author probably got some inspiration in Jose Rizal's novels, Noli me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo". Rizal is considered the Philippines' national hero.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA
Love this storyline! It pulls you into the story, you feel like you are right beside the characters! The intrigue of history, love and new beginnings! Can't wait to read the rest of the series!
This is a stirring story of Spanish conquest in the name of the Church and God, but also with enslavement and lust for gold as its purpose. In tropical islands, the Spanish soldiers and a bogus, lustful friar meet a challenge in the form of a native girl who is a spiritual guide and healer for the primitive natives. The depravity of the conquerers destroy the very fiber of the native civilization, but the native girl and her Spanish benefactor suffer tragic loss but secure a sort of victorious ending.
Such a well written story with characters that make you care right from the start. What a wonderful way the author has shown the prejudices of the time and how some chose to overcome those prejudices even if, for some it was too late. I must admit to shedding a tear that our heroine did not live a long and happy life. I was so disappointed however, that made it an even better book in my eyes. Would I recommend this to my friends? You better believe I would. Excellent job Isobelle Cate, it was my pleasure to once again read another of your wonderful books.
